I think that is a good example of a physiological experiment really. Human nature seems to accept its surroundings as the norm even if it is not as good as one would prefer.
For the longest time, I thought the coloring and textures of most WINDOWS games were vomit. Like, they'd take a picture of vomit and say to the artists, "See how much you can make the walls and floors look like this.", or "This is how we want the spaceship to look." Back when I worked at the electronics store, I'd look at the displays and say, "Yeah, the games are doing some interesting things, but why all the vomit?"
Say what you will, but there was something about the Amiga's graphics that none of the games looked like vomit. They might not have been as good in other ways, but they they didn't look like that.
There's only so far back I'm willing to go. I bought the Unreal games awhile back when they were on sale. I loved UT '99, and thought I might revisit the single player Unreal games. Damn. I remember them looking SO good. I remember the amazing reflections and such in Unreal, but when I went back...not so good. I think 2007 is about as far back as I want to go now, roughly.
