LITE-ON DVD Burner 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA Model iHAS124-14 - OEM

Dunno anything about this particular drive, but Lite-On's used to be well-regarded.

I know Rowdy's in need of a drive.

Thanks Doc! Just what I was looking for - something that was needed but didn't want to spend a lot of $$ on. Thanks to your tip RowdyRot has a new DVD/CD drive in the mail.

Everyone needs a DVD drive. We're not fully digital YET. Hell, I just got rid of my 3.5" floppy drive a few years back!

Indeed. I'd recommend a Blu-Ray Burner to anyone who is looking for a new burner - they can be had for $50 to $100 now. Standard space on a blank blu-ray disc is 25GB! That's just standard - they've got blu-ray discs that can store double that. A couple of those and you can back up your whole music collection! I like to back up my save games, especially for characters I've worked on for years and hoarded awesome gear for.

It's nice to have a digital back up that is not always connected to your computer. Viruses and power surges can render all your backups useless if they're connected at the time of such an event.

There's still a place for non-volatile, immutable storage. It's not perfect, as the disks can go bad, but they have their place.

I've been looking forward to getting a BLU-RAY for years. I have over 400 burned dvds with movies and TV shows on them. If I were to transfer them over, that would save a lot of space. The disks are still kind of pricey though, aren't they?

(checks Amazon)

Yup, still about a dollar a disk at the cheapest. Still, if it holds 25 gigs, that works out OK on a cost per-unit-of-storage basis.

Years ago, I had over 100 cds holding my music collection in MP3 format. Then I moved to DVDs and saved a ton of space.
