Logitech G710 Keyboard with Cherry MX-Blue Keys $69.99

Postby Docjon » Tue Nov 24, 2015 12:59 am

NOW, at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009C98NPY/ref ... G66P&psc=1

If this were the Cherry MX-Browns, I'd be tempted. I'm still halfway tempted by the smaller footprint and simplicity of this keyboard over the Orion Spark with the 15-jillion macro keys and RGB backlit keys. Halfway.

Nice price for a decent mech keyboard.

The Brown Cherry MX version of this keyboard is $70 at NewEgg. I see that they normally go for twice this pirce. So I've gotta ask what makes these keyboards so valuable? I'm asking sincerely because it's been so long since I've actually shopped for a new keyboard (that wasn't from Ideazon).

My Ideazon is starting to die again - some keys have stopped working. I've gone through 3 of these things. They just don't seem to stand up very long to the abuse that I put them through.

I'm considering abandoning the Zboards out of necessity. They don't make them anymore but you can still find them cheap online because people are getting rid of old stock. But one day I won't be able to do that anymore. I might have to wean myself off of them now.

You could be like us cool kids and buy a g910. Lexx, Pal and I picked one up, along with g502 Proteus Core mouse.

Give in to the peer pressure. . .retails for $179.99, $90 to $99 right now, check the forums for info.

They have mechanical keys. They're supposedly nicer to type on. I couldn't tell you, since I haven't typed on a mechanical-style keyboard since around 1985. Some are clicky and loud and have a tactile 'bump' feeling as it activates(Cherry MX Blue Keys). Others just have the 'bump', no clicky (Cherry MX Brown). Yet another type has no bump or click. (Cherry MX Red). You don't have to push all the way down to activate the key, so it's supposed to feel better to type on. Some have multimedia keys, which are useful (I personally won't do without them). How any one can do without volume controls and a mute key is beyond me.

Finally, the lighted keys are pretty. On the G910, each key can be it's own color - you could make weapon keys red, direction controls green, etc etc. There's an app that lets you use your smartphone as an extra screen to display game info, computer info (temps, mem usage fan speed etc). you can sit the phone in a cradle on the g910 and look at it when you need to.

If none of that sounds interesting, any decent membrane keyboard with several key rollover will do ya.

You can take that rule and shove it. I'll stick with Ducky and Das.

Brown's are excellent and what I prefer out of all the switches. I was messing with this at Best Buy today. They have all the Logitech G series stuff 50% off.

Had to hold back on buying another mouse. Always preferred their g series mice.

Of course. That's what I have. ;) I have a Ducky's at home and the Das at work. If I did not have these I would of bought 2 or 3. For the price you can't beat it. Once you use a mechanical you'll smack yourself for not getting one sooner. There was a reason why all those old IBM keyboards sold for a good penny. :D

Dude I LOVE mechanical keyboards. I have been using PC's since the old two slice toasters. i :) i
I still have an old IBM keyboard, pre windows key, that is very tactile (clicky) and I always Loved that feel. Probably equal to a blue these days.

One of my all time favorite keyboards. i :) i

Re: Logitech G710 Keyboard with Cherry MX-Blue Keys $69.99

Das and Ducky's are high-quality, no question, and their price reflects that. The folks on the mechanical keyboard subREDDIT have a real hard-on for 'em. They often own several models, have boxes of extra keysets. . . they even buy fancy (or gaudy) custom-molded keycaps. Out of the box, they're kinda spare and utilitarian though, which seems to be all the rage these days. Maybe it started with the DAS and the blank keycaps, but then tenkeyless became 'cool', then they made the keyboard base thinner, so that the keys appear to stand up higher. The worst crime of all is that they often eschew dedicated multimedia keys. I can't abide a keyboard that doesn't have volume controls of some sort and a mute key, and I much prefer the full complement of play/pause, stop, forward/back. My machine's pretty much my all-in-one entertainment center.

I DID see a pretty slick-looking Ducky with a volume knob (knobs rule), though it was nearly $200. The g910 isn't perfect, but it has a lot going for it when goes on sale for $90. It has the dedicated multimedia keys I crave, mechanical keys that rate 20 million keypresses more durable than Cherrys, uses the same config software as my Logitech mouse, has a nifty app that can use a smartphone/tablet as a secondary screen (the next evolutionary step from the g15's monochrome LCD screen), and has pretty, shiny, individually-programmable multicolored lights that fascinate me like a crow with an old scrap of Christmas tinsel.

I particularly like one feature of the g910, where you can program a key to reflect a 'cooldown' on an in-game command. Say you can only use something once, than you have to wait a minute until you can use it again - you can make the key go dark, or change color until the minute is up, then change back to the normal color. A nice way to remind you that there's no point in trying that command, it's not ready yet. Sure, some games will have an on-screen indicator, but it doesn't hurt to have another one right there as you're trying to activate it. ( The preceding is a function controlled by the game, and you cannot program this yourself at this time. ) Or suppose you're playing a fantasy game, and you're a wizard. You can have the keys that activate your fire spells be red, your ice spells blue or white, acid or poison spells green, etc etc.

If I had the extra cash and they spiced up their product with a few more features, I wouldn't mind having a Das or Ducky, but Logitech is no slouch. They may not have the prestige of the other names, but their products aren't known to fail or break often, and they make good gaming peripherals with cool and/or useful features. It's all pluses and minuses, and at the Black Friday price of $90, it was too good to pass up.

Thanks for the input. I may be working from home again a little more often now that I've established some rapport with my boss/co-workers... perhaps a day a week. So my current keyboard with the unreliable keys simply won't cut it anymore because I'll be using it to write code for a living. I also need something relatively ergonomic so that my repetitive stress injury (RSI) doesn't return - that's whole reason I got into exotic gaming/work keyboards in the 1st place.

Did we talk about split keyboards or 'wave' keyboards at some point? I could keep an eye out for a deal on a specific type/model of keyboard if you have one in mind.

I think any keyboard brand or model mentioned in this thread will do you good. Ducky and Das are very fine keyboards (provided you get the tenkey models, don't mind spending more, and you don't give a rat's ass about dedicated volume or multimedia controls), the G710+ is has well-regarded and time-tested Cherry MX brown keys - nice tactile 'bump' sensation, without the noisy clacking of the MX blues(noise might be important working at home with a small child), and the g910 has Romer-G keys, which are LIKE 'MX-brown' keys (tactile bump, no clacking noise), but with a 1mm shorter activation keystroke, which may make for easier typing for your RSI.

The Orion DOES have a unusual keycap shapes though. I don't personally think they will make a difference, but opinions will vary. Take a look at reviews and pictures, and try one out at Best Buy if you can.

Larva the point of all of this is that Orion is only $90, about half off. You can NOT go wrong on a mechanical keyboard for that price. Even if does not work well for you, you can turn around and sell it for that once the prices go back up. It retails for $170.

I never saw it for less than $129.99, during a sale, prior to this weekend.

Here's an ergonomic keyboard on sale for $19.99:

I've found that proper typing style/form is more important than keyboard layout. If you have to hit the keys too hard for them to register then that's what can really cause problems.

The $20 discount for the G910 at Fry's doesn't work, probably because it's in backorder status. Guess I waited too long.

Got mine from Amazon for $90. Frys was being a pain trying to get it for $80 so it was worth the extra $10 to actually GET ONE... Still a GREAT price.

They will go on sale again tomorrow I am sure.
