Looking For Used Video Card

It looks like the Radeon 7970 that my nephew was using has one foot in the grave.

I'm looking for a replacement, something along the lines of a used/refurbished 290X or GTX 780. I don't want to spend too much because I'll probably just give him my old 290X's when Nvidia comes out with their new cards later this year.

If anyone has or sees anything that fits the bill please let me know. So far I've looked but it seems folks want to charge almost the same for their old gear as you'd pay for it new. It reminds me of used car shopping at the dealership.

Heh, your looking for a better used video card than I currently possess in all my systems ;p I bought a 960 2gb last year that was just a piece of shit compared to my 560. Disappointing but I didn't feel like eating return shipping and restocking fees.

What the hell Larva, it's worth asking. Prophet or Devil Dog might have something. . .but like Lexx, I'm running a lesser card than you're looking to replace - I have a 7850 I game with. I'm actually looking to upgrade my current system. I wanted to do the whole CPU/RAM/Mobo upgrade next year, but with VR coming out, I'm thinking the longer I wait to make that upgrade the better. I figure I'll wait until 2018 or so. To get me by, I want to get around to picking up a new gfx card when I see one that's a price I like and gives a significant boost. Also thinking of picking up 2 4gig sticks to expand to 12 gigs, and while I don't need it, I'd REALLY, REALLY, like to get a cheap new mid/full-tower case. The one I'm using is a mid-tower from 2003 - a god-awful silver-painted job with a plastic side window that shows the crappy, dusty hardware I have. I could actually take this old case and build a whole new system out of my old hardware. It's circa-2008 stuff, but it would be good for multimedia, and to practice guitar on Rocksmith.

I have no clue how the 7970 compares to an NVidia 680 but I bet it is on par or better than mine. i :) i

Point is if it is dying and he needs a new video card that is comparable to it so you could use almost anything that was decent from a few years ago. I have nothing myself to offer though, sorry. As I said, mine is rather old itself by today's standards.

For us normal users, we can get years out of a video card and we do. i :) i

While I have been toying with getting a 970 for awhile now, my 680 still runs fine overall. This is why I haven't so far. I have very few issues with my 680 and I can run most games on high settings just fine. Sure I am not getting 60FPS consistently on all games on ultra high settings (depending on the game) but I don't game as much as you guys do so for me, it is fine.

Yeah I already asked Prophet. I know DevilDog's old gear goes to his wife and kids. His kids are probably running faster video cards than I am. I ain't complaining though - I think that's pretty cool!

Anyway I'm just trying to get his system operational again so we can play Borderlands, Torchlight 2, and Black Ops 3. I'd bought him Insurgency as well. He's been without a reliable computer for 2 months since I took his 8 year old Q6600 rig and gave it to someone else. He couldn't keep playing on the old one though - it no longer worked for newer games. As luck would have it his video card starts malfunctioning minutes after I plop it into a newer computer. The card might have been bad for a while, just never showed it because it wasn't being pushed enough. The old CPU/RAM was bottlenecking the hell out of it.

I asked Gigabyte what it would cost to RMA the 7970 out of warranty. It costs $45 + shipping just to have them look at it. It might be worth it though. I see used 7970's still selling for $200. It's just really crappy timing to have this happen right now. First they cancelled holiday bonuses at work then our furnace started dying on us.

Are you implying that I'm Abby Normal? :P I've done my share of making do with old hardware over the years. I do try to make my upgrades worth it because I NEVER know when I'll be able to upgrade again.
